The University of Virginia's heart is The Lawn, including the Rotunda and Academical Village.

Thomas Jefferson designed this 'Academical Village', with help from notable architect-friends, to invite learning by engaging students and faculty in a community, living and learning together around the Lawn. The ten Pavilions were architectural icons by which students learned to appreciate good classical design. (As a grad student, I enjoyed drawing the distinctive pavilions from the Lawn.) The cornerstone of the first pavilion was laid 1817, with Jefferson, Madison, Monroe and other important old white men and established as the first public university in the new nation in 1819.

The beloved Lawn, surrounded by student dormitories, pavilions of learning and the Rotunda library is a vibrant place of picnics, study and study breaks, the holiday lighting of the Lawn festivities and the annual spring graduation and countless impromptu gatherings!

This drawing represents Pavilion X [10] c. 1989 prior to the current restoration.

Prints available in three color ways:

11" x 14" and 16" x 20" are the best print sizes to purchase if you'd like to find a frame "off the shelf" instead of custom framing. Prints have a border so no mat is required - just pop it in the frame of the same size and hang!

Original drawing. Print is signed & dated by me, on back.
