San Giovanni in Laterano was very special to visit because larger then life size marble statues of the Twelve Apostles line its great sanctuary nave. One of five major basilicas of Rome that I drew, inside and out, San Giovanni was marked by a dedicated repetition of squares, heavily ornamented. I made the ink drawing as an architectural history graduate student on fellowship from University of Virginia in 2012. I used watercolor to interpret and enliven the drawing during pandemic quarantine, Spring 2020.
