Positano is a beautiful village etched into Italy’s western cliffs on the Amalfi Coast. Walking through the village is an exercise in stepping, viewing, stepping and viewing - and drawing. The pattern of architectural openings, windows and doors, as well as the cliffs themselves, tell the story of a vertical village intertwined with the landscape, and the sea.
I made the ink drawing as an undergraduate architecture student on travel study abroad with the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech in 1998. I used watercolor to enliven and re-interpret the drawing here, in December 2022.
