Table Mountain rises above Capetown, South Africa like a curtain on the city’s stage. Its variety of plateau forms - Back Table, Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak - offer a wild multiplicity of views - both of the mountain and from the mountain.
The MOUNTAINS Collection, and this piece, is an exploration of brush + line, using the metaphorical form of MOUNTAIN to see how the marks of paintbrush and pen or pencil, with their contrasting textures, can work together to model the tactile surfaces of land.
This view features the “Devil’s Peak”, an oblique view of Table Mountain in rich earth tones. The ochre is a handmade paint from rocks foraged near my home. Black ink lines convey the texture of the city to the left and long graceful watercolor brush strokes glide down the plateau to the sea on the right. In black, grey, ochres and warm salmon-pink, the landform comes alive in its textural complexity!
