Barcelona is one of my favorite cities, especially the old city, the Ciutat Vella. We stayed in a hostel here with many rooms - like an apartment building. I drew the floor plan of the hostel (upper left) and the street network surrounding, capturing the organic, medieval structure of both. Adding color that reminded me of Spain, warm vibrant tones, was a fun way to add texture to the building blocks encased in old stone streets.I made the ink drawing while traveling with my brother over holiday break in 2007; the travel was a generous gift from the architect I worked for in Savannah Georgia, Christian Sottile. I used watercolor to interpret and enliven the drawing during pandemic quarantine, Spring 2020.

Together, they reveal my personal evolution in architectural travel sketching and offer a piece of travel art that can remind you of your own memories in place, invite you into these spaces with your own experiential vision.
