Piazza San Pietro, Roma 2
*All of my Travel Sketches may be re-painted by commission. If you see one you like that is sold or you'd prefer in different colors, contact me!*
The epic mother church - San Pietro in Roma - and its papal surroundings are intended to inspire awe. They are awesome. I thronged with the crowd to see the Pope, sort of accidentally, and was just a few feet from the Holy Father atop his white limousine. When I finally got into the church, dressed per usual in a nice black tee and knee length skirt, I was kindly asked to leave for my attire was inappropriate. I happily ended up in the piazza after the crowd dispersed, drawing, as usual, the in-between spaces, the not so epic things that caught my eye. I drew the view through each of the columns in the monumental colonnades. As I sketched the view on the other side of the colonnade, the “outside”, an elderly woman befriended me and we sat together on a stone bench - made my day.
I made the ink drawing as an architectural history graduate student on fellowship from University of Virginia in 2012. I used watercolor to enliven and re-interpret the drawing here, in December 2022.

Welcome to my Travel Sketches II Collection: lines drawn on site now illuminated by waterCOLOR, a little more wild and free than the first collection of May 2020. Together, the Sketches reveal my personal evolution in architectural travel sketching and offer a piece of travel art that can remind you of your own memories in place.
Thanks for helping to GIVE BACK: I'll also donate 5% of the sale of this piece to the School of Architecture at University of Virginia for student assistance/scholarship for travel study abroad.
