Trastevere, Roma
*All of my Travel Sketches may be re-painted by commission. If you see one you like that is sold or you'd prefer in different colors, contact me!*
The main piazza in Trastevere, centered on the Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere, was my neighborhood piazza while living there for a fellowship. At the end of the day, after running around the city drawing, I sat on the stone floor here and watched the people pass through - gathering into the cafes, relaxing around the fountain in the center, playing music. After the drawing I was doing during the day, it felt leisurely to simply draw the facades that form the piazza. When I re-visited this drawing now in watercolor, I chose to mark the various paths I took in and out of the piazza with my brush. I thought the piece was finished after painting the facades - but as I laid it aside, the idea struck me and I think it really brings the feeling of life and movement in the piazza!
I made the ink drawing as an architectural history graduate student on fellowship from University of Virginia in 2012. I used watercolor to interpret and enliven the drawing during pandemic quarantine, Spring 2020.

I'm excited to bring nearly 100 of my architectural Travel Sketches, created in mostly Italy, but also Switzerland, France, Spain, Greece, Hungary and Czech Republic from 1998 - 2012, into a Collection: lines drawn on site now illuminated by watercolor. Together, they reveal my personal evolution in architectural travel sketching and offer a piece of travel art that can remind you of your own memories in place, invite you into these spaces with your own experiential vision.
