Washington DC's ubiquitous city plan is rendered in pencil and watercolor as it was around the turn of the century. Before the National Mall became a world-class exposition grounds for arts, culture, politics, after numerous attempts by urban designers and landscape architects, the swampy backwater of the tidal basin appeared a rough juxtaposition to the awesome white marble and granite Washington Monument erected in 1884.
