My hand-drawn and painted streetscape depicts Staunton's Wharf and the Sears Hill Bridge, and Sears Hill on Bridge Day.
Staunton Virginia's a treasure trove of great turn-of-the-century architecture but it would certainly not be, if not for the Railroad! Where the northern and southern line crossed, Staunton was a shipping point for both Shenandoah valley agriculture and coal from West Virginia. The Depot and "Wharf" area is a cataclysm of industrial, transport, storage, entertainment and recreational structures set against the rock cliff of Sears Hill. The 100+year-old iron bridge was recently removed then refurbished and replaced, a momentous community effort at connecting Staunton's vital places. Want the best view of the city's architectural skyline? Cross the Bridge and look out over the railroad and depot from Sears Hill! You will want to live here.
The Sears house on Sears Hill joined to the former warehouses of the Wharf (and tips of the downtown skyline) by The Bridge. Surrounded by the water tower, the railroad, the cut-away cliff, the Depot, the re-purposed Cars and Cabooses. All criss-crossed about by the White Bunting created for Bridge Day by Rachel's Quilts. Balloons lift off from the bridge in celebration under a pink cotton candy sky!
