Siena’s medieval patterns are epitomized in the Piazza del Campo. I was amazed to see how the Campo is actually a huge brick bowl, sloping down in sections, like an orange, from the rim to the tall bell tower. I imagined horses racing around it. After sketching the Campo, I walked up through the streets, drawing a section through the intervening buildings of my short trek, to the Duomo di Siena. It was a much different space, the piazza del Duomo, from a different time, but the presence of a tall tower was the same.
I made the ink drawings as an undergraduate architecture student on travel study abroad with the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech in 1998. I used watercolor to enliven and re-interpret the drawing here, in December 2022.
