TACOMA, Washington. This map view centers on the "shoulder" of Tacoma, Stadium District. Long narrow blocks downtown ascending to Hilltop minimize the steep numbered streets that traverse the big hill. More squared blocks define the plateau beyond Wright Park. North Slope appears like a diagonal joint between Wright Park and the regular blocks of Central Tacoma, 6th Ave. and North Tacoma that run east-west. The highways carved out historic residential and industrial neighborhoods at the base of McKinley and Strawberry Hill.
The URBAN BURDEN Collection, is a Contemplation of the layers upon layers of a city block: soil, rock, garbage, treasures, plate tectonics, wind, water, glacial scrapes, urban design, acts of violence, acts of redemption, delight, kindness. Each block is a site of burden, accumulation of the millenia of natural forces and habitation.
